“That’s Ryan’s Job”
August 10, 2022
Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles gave an overview of Tampa Bay’s kicking competition today.
And make no mistake, it’s a contest between veteran Super Bowl season hero Ryan Succop and sophomore Jose Borregales. Succop turns 36 next month and earns a lot of money; Borregales was the top kicker in college football in 2020 and spent last season on the Bucs practice squad.
Apparently everyone with a fancy title at One Buc Palace has been saying for months that Succop will be entering an open competition for their work this season.
Today on WDAE Radio, Bowles digs deeper into his pending decision.
Bowles is all about consistency, he said, noting Borregales has the big leg but Succop has years of consistency under his belt and that shouldn’t be ignored. However, Bowles said Borregales have been consistent and will have to show they can handle that during pre-season as the two have had a good side.
Looks like Borregelas is going to have to kick
like Rams Pro Bowler Matt Guy her ass to win the job this month.
“He has to take the job,” Bowles said. “It’s Ryan’s job, but Borregales has been closing the gap, consistently and consistently, so pre-season we’ll see.”
Joe doesn’t think Bowles would be afraid to go with Borregales. His history with the Jets says he wouldn’t. But he should definitely be terrified of cutting Succop if he had a cohesive camp. Joe suspects there’s no urge to leave Succop – unless he gives the team some good reasons.
