Supporting Student Wellbeing: Overcoming Challenges to New Heights

Stepping out of your comfort zone and taking on challenges often leads to personal growth, self-discovery, and empowerment. This can often take shape as students navigate the rigors of the classroom, and now, through the pairing of Barnes Center at The Arch’s challenge course and zipline opportunities, students can cultivate their holistic health and well-being.

Why is it important to encourage participation in the Challenge Course and the Zipline?
Skills learned through outdoor adventure, including the challenge course and zipline experiences, are transferable throughout students’ unique health and wellness journeys. When explored through the Barnes Center at The Arch Wellness Wheel, they encompass emotional well-being, environmental well-being, intellectual well-being, physical well-being, and social well-being.

“Weaved into daily interactions, these skills can be used to successfully navigate group projects and tasks while developing healthy, positive relationships with peers, colleagues, faculty, staff, and future employers,” says Scott Catucci G ’21, Barnes Center associate at The Arch. director for outdoor adventure, esports and student development.

Growth themes focus on re-examining how students relate to the people and places around them. Additional highlights include:

Challenge course

Students learn effective communication skills, cooperation, resilience, and more while participating in the college challenge course.

What do I need to participate in the challenge course and zip line?
Individual challenge and zipline class opportunities, as well as group challenge class sign-up opportunities, are available throughout the end of the semester and during the summer months. Students are encouraged to register on the Wellness Portal. For enrollment instructions and more information, visit the Wellness Portal Instructions webpage.

There is no additional cost to participate. Students are asked to wear closed shoes, such as sneakers or boots, in addition to weather-appropriate clothing, such as sportswear. The health and wellness team will further support the experiments through education, guidance, and providing all necessary equipment, such as a helmet and harness.

Where is the Outdoor Challenge course and the zip line?
Located on South Campus, the Outdoor Education Center, Challenge Course, and Zipline can be accessed using the Syracuse University Shuttle.

Are there other opportunities for outdoor adventures?
Throughout the academic year, The Barnes Center at The Arch offers a variety of outdoor adventure experiences. Future offerings will be available on the Syracuse University Wellness Portal and Events Calendar.
