The Humboldt-Del Norte league announced new guidelines for spectators at high school sporting events for the winter season that will allow each student-athlete to have up to four family members starting Jan. 24.

Commissioner Jack Lakin’s announcement says family members will need to enter as a group and follow masking requirements once inside.

“To maximize attendance opportunities for family members, gymnasiums will be ‘cleaned’ between each game and then the next group of family members will enter the facilities,” Lakin said in the announcement. “For smooth transitions between games, your quick start and patience while waiting to enter are greatly appreciated.”

The league received backlash after announcing Jan. 6 that superintendents of participating schools had voted 6-4 to ban spectators until at least Jan. 23 in an effort to slow the spread of the highly contagious variant of Omicron COVID. -19 locally and keep schools open. for in-person instruction and competitive student-athletes. (Read more about the league’s decision in the January 13 Newspaper cover story here.)

Each school will be responsible for building a “guest list” for home and away games.

“In support of these priorities, superintendents and the Humboldt-Del Norte League remind the community to fulfill the CDPH requirement to be masked in all high school buildings and all high school indoor sporting events,” says Latkin.

After careful consideration and discussion, HDNL superintendents have reached consensus regarding new spectator guidelines for the remainder of the 2022 winter sports season.

Group discussions focused on the following priorities:
1. Preserve school education for all students
2. Preserve opportunities for student-athletes to compete
3. Provide a setting for family members to attend scheduled HDNL wrestling games/contests
4. Avoid California Department of Public Health (CDPH) defined mega events of 500 or more people, requiring vaccine verification or negative tests for all attendees age 2 and older

Starting Monday, January 24, each student-athlete will be able to invite up to 4 family members to attend an HDNL winter sports event. Family members will participate in events as a group and will also follow CDPH-required masking guidelines once they enter the gym. To maximize attendance opportunities for family members, gymnasiums will be “emptied” between each game and then the next group of family members will enter the facilities.

For smooth transitions between games, your quick start and patience while waiting to enter are greatly appreciated. Each school will be responsible for developing its “guest list” of family members for home and away games.

In support of these priorities, superintendents and the Humboldt-Del Norte league are reminding the community to adhere to the CDPH requirement for mask wearing in all high school buildings and at all high school indoor sporting events. Thank you in advance for your understanding, cooperation and help.

Respectfully Jack Lakin HDNL Commissioner
