Highlights of Bangalore, Karnataka: Kannada actor Puneeth Rajkumar passed away at Vikram Hospital in Bangalore on Friday after suffering a heart attack, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai confirmed.
His body is to be kept at Kanteerava Stadium for people to pay their respects. The police are making arrangements and tight security is in place around the stadium. Speaking to the media, Minister of State R Ashoka said Rajkumar’s last rites will be performed with full state honors and the family will decide when.
Rajkumar was admitted to the intensive care unit from a private hospital in Bangalore after complaining of chest pain at around 11.40am. The 46-year-old superstar reportedly collapsed while working out in a gymnasium and was immediately rushed to hospital. According to a statement released by Vikram Hospital, Rajkumar was unresponsive when brought in and was in cardiac asystole.
Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, Bengaluru City Police Commissioner Kamal Pant and several other dignitaries visited the hospital. The Karnataka government has alerted Bengaluru District Commissioners, DCPs and SPs to step up security in their jurisdictions across the state.
In other news, Karnataka saw a surge in new coronavirus cases and deaths on Thursday with 478 new infections and 17 deaths reported, bringing the number of cases and death toll to 29, 87,313 and 38,054. Bengaluru Urban recorded the peak number of 235 new cases and seven deaths, he said.
