An apple, a cat and a wish

This story aims to empower children by encouraging them to explore how they can develop their “honeypots of inner happiness”.

“An Apple, a Cat and a Wish” is aimed at children aged 7-14 and covers strategies children can adopt to build resilience and confidence in the face of life’s challenges. With the welfare of children at heart,
It includes a number of themes that can be discussed with young people, such as friendship, school worries and bereavement.

Emma explained that having worked in education for 25 years, including as headmaster of a school in South Lincolnshire in England for 9 years, “I have experienced the challenges of Covid-19 first hand. and its emotional impact on children and I wanted to encourage children and make them aware of the importance of doing the things that make you feel good inside.

Emma kindly shared a short synopsis of the story: “After remembering some of the ‘spells’ her mother had taught her, a teenage girl embarks on a magical adventure in her new home to hunt the little witch who, according to her, exists deep in her garden. The girl’s quest takes her and a mysterious cat to a meeting under the apple tree with “Merry Wish Minty”, a quick-witted witch looking for new ideas to put on. in the spells she creates to help others. Merry Wish Minty refers to her spells as “wishes” because she is a firm believer in the power of positive thinking and the pleasure that comes from acts of kindness.

Emma explained: “I’ve always loved telling stories and wanted to create something for children and if I can reach a child’s thoughts and uplift their well-being through the story I share, then that can only be a joyful result. Adding that “In a pastoral sense, I would like to see my book used in classrooms as a good teaching tool, but it is just as enjoyable for a parent and child to read together.”

Emma and her husband decided to move to the Algarve over a year ago: “We love Portugal, I came here often when I was a child, my parents loved the Algarve! So we thought we had to do it, before we talked ourselves out of it!”

“It’s so beautiful here and the people here are so friendly and family oriented. I have two daughters-in-law who are 12 and 15 and they are at an age where they can totally buy into the pool. We also went out with our two black Labradors who are living their best life.

A beautiful tribute

The author shared that the story was inspired by his mother who died of cancer but jotted down a few ideas for this story, including the little witch at the bottom of the garden. “My mum was a schoolteacher and had a special talent for creative writing. While she was ill she said I had these ideas and I would like you to go and please write them down.

“To be honest I didn’t do much about it for a very long time, every summer I used to sit in the back garden of my house and we had this old apple tree and I thought I had to take inspiration from it, so I mapped out all the ideas weaving into my mother’s initial ideas, it was important to stay true to me.

The importance of the game

“I wanted to keep the story pretty simple and relatable, because you don’t have to look far to find an environment in which you can use your imagination. We know that nature is anatomical to the soul and that it is so good for us. Actually just the engagement of the game, there are so many academics behind it that really teach us that children play through metaphors and project their good and bad experiences.

Coming

Emma told me she would like to write more, revealing that a sequel could be on the cards and that it would focus on the importance of sleep for children “I’m a huge fan of Professor Matt Walker who wrote on the importance of sleep and I think it’s so important to establish really good bedtime routines I have a few ideas around mindfulness and relaxation so maybe I’ll create a similar script with another little witch for another family. Emma also hopes to start a blog, where she would like to share wellness messages for children every day.
